Khawa Tea Recipe: A Sip of Kashmiri Tradition

Khawa, also spelled as Kahwa, is a traditional Kashmiri tea known for its rich flavors and warming properties. Often enjoyed during the cold months, Khawa is not just a beverage but an experience, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir. Below is a simple recipe to make this aromatic tea at home.

Ingredients

To prepare a delightful pot of Khawa tea, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 4 cups water
  • 2-3 teaspoons green tea leaves
  • 4-5 green cardamom pods, crushed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4-5 cloves
  • 1-2 teaspoons saffron strands
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or honey (adjust to taste)
  • 10-12 almonds, slivered
  • 10-12 pistachios, slivered
  • Rose petals for garnish (optional)

Method

Follow these simple steps to make a perfect cup of Khawa tea:

Step 1: Boil the Water

  1. Pour 4 cups of water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil.

Step 2: Add Spices and Tea

  1. Once the water is boiling, add the crushed green cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, and saffron strands. Let these spices simmer for about 2-3 minutes to infuse their flavors into the water.
  2. Add the green tea leaves to the boiling water and reduce the heat. Allow it to steep for 3-4 minutes. The tea should not boil too vigorously as it can make the tea bitter.

Step 3: Sweeten the Tea

  1. Add sugar or honey to the tea. Stir until it dissolves completely. Adjust the sweetness according to your preference.

Step 4: Strain and Serve

  1. Strain the tea into cups to remove the tea leaves and spices.
  2. Add the slivered almonds and pistachios to each cup for added richness and texture.
  3. Garnish with rose petals if desired.

Step 5: Enjoy

  1. Serve the Khawa tea hot and enjoy its warming and aromatic flavors.

Tips for the Perfect Khawa

  • Use high-quality green tea leaves for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of saffron according to your taste. Saffron adds a distinctive flavor and color to the tea.
  • For an extra touch of authenticity, serve Khawa in traditional Kashmiri cups or small bowls.

Khawa tea is perfect for cozy evenings, festive gatherings, or any time you want to enjoy a soothing and fragrant cup of tea. Try making Khawa at home and experience the delightful blend of spices and tea that is cherished in Kashmiri culture.
